Mayfair is constantly evolving; the landscape changes all the time; today, we are going to highlight four new luxury hotels that are under construction. With so many legendary hotels in London, you might wonder if there is room for four large hotels in the luxury hotel market, all situated in or close to Mayfair. They will compete against giants in the Hotel world, such as The Connaught, The Ritz, and Claridge’s, to name but three.
So today, we look at four new hotels that have recently opened or are due to open soon.
1 The Peninsula
The Peninsula opened in 2023 with 190 rooms & suites; also available are 25 luxury residences for sale. The new hotel sits on the site of a former office block overlooking Hyde Park Corner. The Peninsula Group owns hotels across Asia, the USA & Europe; This will be its first in the UK. The hotel will come with a single-story shopping mall & of course, a selection of exclusive bars and restaurants. We will update details on the restaurants as soon as we find out more.
2 1 Hotel Mayfair
1 Hotel Mayfair: Where Nature Meets Luxury in the Heart of London
Nestled amidst the vibrant streets of Mayfair, 1 Hotel Mayfair has unveiled its doors, offering a sanctuary where nature and luxury intertwine seamlessly. This captivating hotel, the UK flagship and first European destination of the nature-inspired 1 Hotels brand, stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to sustainable practices and biophilic design.
Step into a World of Immersive Nature
From the moment you step through the revolving doors, you’re greeted by a Spanish moss chandelier. This mesmerising installation evokes the tranquillity of a rainforest amidst the bustling city. This living art piece sets the tone for the hotel’s pervasive connection to nature, a theme that continues throughout the property.
Sustainability at the Heart of Design
1 Hotel Mayfair’s commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of its design. The hotel’s two pre-existing Mayfair buildings were carefully renovated, retaining over 80% of the existing structures. This decision reduced the amount of embodied carbon, minimised construction waste, and contributed to the hotel’s BREEAM Excellent rating.
A Haven of Relaxation and Rejuvenation
The hotel’s 181 guest rooms, including 44 suites, offer a sanctuary of tranquillity, each adorned with natural hues and textures that evoke a sense of serenity. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the rooms in natural light while living moss walls add a touch of verdant greenery.
Indulge in Farm-to-Table Fare
1 Hotel Mayfair’s culinary offerings emphasise the importance of sustainability. 1 Hotel Mayfair’s restaurant is Dovetale, led by the Two Michelin-starred Chef Tom Sellers, Dovetale is a haven for reimagined European classics, showcased through a produce-led a la carte menu.
Experience the Beauty of Nature
Beyond its stylish accommodations and delectable cuisine, 1 Hotel Mayfair offers guests a variety of immersive nature experiences.
3 The Chancery Rosewood Mayfair
The Chancery Rosewood, opening in 2024 it is housed in the US embassy & the impressive frontage overlooks Grosvenor square. 139 Rooms including suites, apparently the finished hotel will feature 1920s art deco styling. At this stage all we know it will include a 750-capacity ballroom, a wellness facility, and 5 retail outlets along with restaurant spaces designed by Tristan Auer.
4 Mystery Hotel
This one is a bit of a mystery, I have been trying to find out more information on this prestige site overlooking Green Park on Piccadilly. It is a massive site & as you can see from the picture it’s part renovation. At the time of writing, I’ve not found out too much info on the development so have resorted to asking Construction workers for details. Responses are varied but they all agree is a luxury hotel (one guy said 7 star). Opening times vary from 2 years to 5 years!!! I will find out more in the coming weeks and will update this post.
Wall of Kindness
On a side note on this development. They have set up a wall of kindness at the front of the building where people can leave coats that are no longer required. Above coat hooks, there is a sign that reads reads
Take a coat if your cold
Leave a coat if no longer required
What a lovely idea by the developers.
5 What does the addition of more luxury hotels mean for Mayfair?
So another 4 luxury hotels in an already crowded marketplace, what impact will it have? Obviously, it provides a lot more capacity in the Luxury hotel market in and around Mayfair, I’m not sure the established Hotels in the area will be too pleased. A very back-of-the-envelope calculation (trust me my maths is not my strong point) means there will be approximately 700 rooms available per night & that’s 255,500 rooms per year.
Winners & Losers
Well, the luxury hotel market is very competitive & I’m guessing the existing luxury hotels with the new competition this with slight trepidation. However, these hotels are continually upgrading their hotels and have a very loyal customer base (Clariges has recently undergone a massive renovation program). The restaurants, bars, shops & cafes will welcome the additional influx of well-heeled guests to the area. The new hotels will add facilities for the events & corporate market & strengthen the position London has in the Corporate entertainment market
In the next few years, many more tourists will come to London & the UK, particularly from the US, Asia & Middle East. Time will tell how this all pans out, but I know that these will not be the last 5-star hotels added to the Mayfair landscape.
I will update you on these hotels and any other news as I hear it.
