Latest News; Oyster Frenzy at Bentley’s Mayfair
Mark your calendars for Thursday, 19th September, as Bentley’s Oyster Bar & Grill in Mayfair gears up to host the much-anticipated London Oyster Championships 2024. This isn’t just any oyster event; it’s a celebration of the return of the native oyster season, running from September through April, and a must-visit for all seafood lovers.
After taking over from the illustrious Tabasco British Oyster Championship last year, this annual competition promises to be more exciting than ever. Set against the backdrop of Bentley’s historic terrace—where they’ve been serving top-notch oysters for over a century—this gathering will unite some of the UK’s finest chefs and bivalve experts.
The competition heats up in two thrilling categories: Speed Shucking and Best Dressed. Watch as shuckers race against the clock, navigating through five intense heats before facing off in the grand finale. The judging panel is a culinary dream team featuring Chris Leftwich, Chairman of the Shellfish Association of Great Britain; Tristan Hugh-Jones from Rossmore Oysters; and Nicki Holmyard, a master shucker and industry expert.
But that’s not all! The winners will earn bragging rights and represent England at the World Championships in Galway, Ireland, on an all-expenses-paid adventure. Last year, Bentley’s own ‘Oyster Boy’ Federico Fiorillo brought home the World Oyster Opening Champion title. Can he do it again?
Returning to defend his title is last year’s Best Dressed Champion, Gabriel Waterhouse from The Waterhouse Project. He’ll be up against culinary talent from across the nation, including Dinings SW3, The Suffolk, Darby’s, Erst, Pearly Queen, and The Pony Chew Valley. The judges for this category include celebrated chef Richard Corrigan, rapper and food enthusiast Professor Green, and Ballymaloe Cookery School founder Darina Allen, who will decide who takes home the coveted Best Dressed crown.
Hosting the afternoon’s festivities will be the fabulous Gizzi Erskine, guiding guests through a delightful experience filled with native oysters, champagne, and plenty of friendly competition.
This year’s event will also launch the Shell to Shore initiative in collaboration with the Blue Marine Foundation. This recycling scheme collects used oyster shells from London restaurants and returns them to Essex Estuaries for oyster restoration. It’s a fantastic way to spark conversations about the importance of native oysters and sustainable seafood practices.
Don’t miss your chance to be part of this epic culinary showdown! A limited number of tickets are available for just £50. Grab yours here and join the oyster-loving community for an unforgettable day at Bentley’s!
