A Culinary Journey Through London’s Finest Pub Grub

Discover Mayfair’s Top Pubs for Classic British Dishes and Exceptional Pints

Mayfair boasts an excellent selection of pubs, each offering a great pint alongside fine pub grub. Based on our experience, here are our top seven food pubs in Mayfair, presented in no particular order. While many of our selections feature full restaurant menus (some high-end), our list focuses on the great British tradition of pub grub.

On the menu of Mayfair’s Magnificent Seven are British classics like Scotch eggs, sausage rolls, and fish and chips. Among our selections, you’ll also find wonderful pies, oysters, Welsh rarebit, and even braised pig’s head on toast. So sit back, pour yourself your favourite tipple, and explore the mouthwatering treats available in London’s Mayfair.

1 Guinea Grill

Tucked away in Bruton Place, the famous Guinea Grill was London’s first steakhouse, serving exceptional steaks since 1952. Last year, it was voted among the Top 100 steak restaurants in the world—high praise indeed.

Make no mistake, the Guinea Grill is at heart a traditional pub with a separate restaurant area. It’s hugely popular and renowned for serving an excellent pint of Guinness alongside a selection of ales. As expected from an award-winning pub, the pub grub selection is very impressive.

As well as being to order one of the best steaks on the planet, other highlights include the pie selection, Welsh rarebit, oysters, devilled kidneys on toast, and a sausage roll elevated to superstar status.

Any visit comes with excellent service from Cristiano and the team, complete with a doorman in top hat and tails, which adds to the experience.

A relatively new addition to the Mayfair pub scene, The Audley offers everything a great pub should: comfortable surroundings, excellent service, and outstanding food and drink.

Located on the corner of Mount Street and South Audley Street, it has quickly gained a reputation as a must-visit pub. Upstairs is the high-end Mount Street restaurant. The Audley prides itself on sourcing produce from across the UK, including Durslade Farm, part of the Artfarm group that owns the pub, restaurant, and Mayfair’s Farm Shop across the road.

The pub menu is extensive, featuring pub classics alongside unique offerings like bratwurst bread with mustard, London dip with horseradish butter and gravy, a spring salad of Jersey Royals, peas, spring onions, and baby gem lettuce, and braised pig’s head on toast.

Don’t miss the wonderful ceiling collage created by London artist Phyllida Barlow.

3 Barley Mow

Opened in 2023, this award-winning pub, part of the Cubitt House group, has attracted many admirers in its short existence. Food plays a central role in its offerings, with menus created by executive chef Ben Tish. Venture upstairs for a high-end restaurant serving British fare, or stay in the pub to enjoy a beautiful croque monsieur, meat bun French dip, or a plate of oysters dressed with shallot mignonette.

4 The Punchbowl

Once owned by Guy Ritchie, The Punchbowl, tucked away in Mayfair’s mews streets, is now owned by the independent Butcombe Brewing Company. This popular pub won Muddy Stilettos’ Destination Pub of the Year for 2025. A traditional pub in every sense, it features Judy’s restaurant on the first floor and “The Club” private dining room on the top floor.

The breakfast menu is tantalisingly good, offering everything from a full English to porridge, oysters, and devilled kidneys. Bar menu highlights include salt and pepper calamari with Vietnamese dipping sauce, Butcombe IPA rarebit with pickles, and Koffmann fries.

5 The Chesterfield Arms

Established circa 1737 on the edge of Mayfair’s Shepherd Market, The Chesterfield Arms is a bright and airy traditional pub with an upstairs restaurant. The menu features pub snacks and main meals, with a signature dish of Beef Wellington, which I can personally recommend. Other delights include a standout venison and duck Scotch egg with curry ketchup. If you are looking to try a good traditional Sunday lunch, the Roast menu is a special event at The Chesterfield Arms and not to be missed.

The friendly service and lively atmosphere make it a popular haunt for visitors to Shepherd Market.

Address: 50 Hertford St, Mayfair, London W1J 7SS

6 The Windmill

The Windmill, a Young’s pub on Mill Street, is all about pies, boasting eight award-winning pies on its menu. It also has a pie room and pie club. If pies aren’t your thing, there are pub classics, plus snacks like ox cheek croquettes, Marmite and Gruyère hash browns, and party-sharing boards for larger groups. To my knowledge, The Windmill is the only pub locally with a roof garden.

7 The Footman

One of London’s oldest pubs, established in 1749 as The Running Horse, The Footman was a popular spot for footmen serving Mayfair’s households. One footman eventually bought the pub and renamed it The Running Footman.

Today, it offers an exceptional food menu. The upstairs dining room features a full à la carte menu, while the downstairs pub area serves a comprehensive bar menu with dishes like a breakfast pig sausage sandwich, Baron Bigod (an English Brie) with grape mustard and Branston pickle gravy, burrata and heritage tomato panzanella with rose harissa and charred orange, and a daily pie. Fine beers and a warm welcome complete the experience.

Address: 5 Charles St, Mayfair, London W1J 5DF

So, there you have our super seven foodie pubs in Mayfair. Each pub has its own unique identity, but they all share two things: exceptional food and immense popularity.

Your dilemma might be choosing which one to visit. My suggestion? Why not visit them all, one a day for a week?I can’t think of many better ways to spend a week! Enjoy.
