December Round-up 2025

Fellow Foodie,

I can’t believe I’m writing the last newsletter of the year; time has flown. Anyhow, I know Christmas is on our doorstep and you are busy, so I will keep this newsletter brief. For those of you taking part in the Christmas quiz that I sent out, the answers are at the bottom of this newsletter. If, for any reason, you did not receive the quiz email, please click here

This Month’s Review

Just one review to talk about this month: restaurant and bar Ukai on Portobello Road. It was so lovely to be back in the area and especially visiting Ukai for the first time. The Japanese-inspired menu worked so well. Read more here. Rafaello Snowman, Gingerbread match and Clementine Chocolate Cake

Its not a review but I did have the absolute pleasure recently trying these festive delicacies at the new L’ETO Brompton Road. My favourite was the Clementine Chocolate cake. I’m sure these delightful treats will be available throughout the Christmas period at all 9 L’ETO’s’ across central London.

Best Reviews of 2025

It was another fantastic year of restaurant reviews, so I’ve put together a mini “best of” list – basically just added random titles as an excuse to mention some of my favourite restaurant reviews and dishes this year:Lilibets seafood counter & lobster raviolo at The Cocochine

  1. Best Newcomer – Lilibets, it’s so good. If you go, you have to try the Triptych of Fish,
  2. Best Set Lunch Menu – We championed restaurant set lunches on our newsletter this year (as we will in 2026). Winner: The Cocochine. Out-of-town winner: Starling. To be honest, both set menus were exceptional and great value.
  3. Best Restaurant Signature Dish – Peking Duck at Mimi Mei Fair. I still dream about the duck; it was delicious.
  4. Hidden Gem – SILVA, next door to the wonderful Guinea Grill, a lovely friendly Mediterranean restaurant in Bruton Place, outstanding food.
  5. Best Neighbourhood Restaurant – Nipotino, a local, friendly Italian restaurant, which is always a winner.
  6. Best Pie – Ox cheek and bone marrow pie at The Punchbowl. I ate this on possibly the hottest day of the year – not ideal, but I had to have it. It was a very good pie.
  7. Best Asian Restaurant – Novikov. I just love it and the fish counter is amazing special and the was the dim sum was sensational.
  8. Best Vegetarian Restaurant – Tendril. Chef Rishim Sachdeva is a genius with a vegetable.
  9. Best Private Dining Room – Caviar Kaspia and The Cocochine. You could happily live in either room; they both have very comfortable lounge areas
  10. Best Wine Bar – Marjorie’s Soho. Opened this year to great reviews, including mine. Along with the wine, the food is also very good.

On My Hit List for 2026

  1. Legado, Shoreditch – Nieves Barragán’s highly acclaimed new restaurant
  2. The Elizabeth, Ebury Street – Wild Honey’s Anthony Demetre has added his touch in developing the menu. That’s good enough for me to want to go
  3. The Dover, Dover Street – It was on this year’s list and I’ve still not been. Must try harder next year.
  4. Carbone, Mayfair – Despite mixed reviews, I still want to go
  5. The Marlborough/Crisp Pizza – I need to be convinced that a pizza can be so special.
  6. Motorino, 1 Pearson Square – 1970s-inspired Italian
  7. Alta, Kingly Court – Featuring dishes from Northern Spain. I’ve only heard good things about Alta.
  8. Poon’s, Somerset House – See more details below
  9. The Hart, Marylebone – A recent opening by The Public House group.
  10. Dorian, Notting Hill- another restaraunt/bisro thats been on my hit list for ages

I’m sure I’ve forgotten some, but that’s enough to be getting on with!

New Restaurant Openings

Labombe by Trivet

Labombe is classed as a casual restaurant by Jonny Lake and Isa Bal, the duo behind 2 Michelin-starred Trivet. The restaurant is centred around a wood-fired oven and grill. As well as an à la carte menu, there is a great-value set lunch menu that we shall be featuring in the new year in the newsletter.

19 Old Park Lane, Mayfair, W1K 1LB

Chargal Mayfair

Taking over the former Jeru site on Berkeley Street, restaurateur Serdar Demir (The Mantl, Knightsbridge) has launched this ambitious three-storey Turkish venture. The ground floor offers relaxed mezze-focused dining, whilst upstairs delivers a more formal tablecloth affair. Live-fire cooking is the heart of the operation, with oak-charcoal flames applied to everything from grilled halloumi doughnuts to wagyu iskender

Aces Foodcraft

Alex Craciun’s debut restaurant in Fitzrovia is a project eight years in the making with his wife, Aleksandra Jazevica. The ex-Sosharu chef showcases the very best of British produce through dishes influenced by Japanese precision from his time in Michelin-starred Tokyo kitchens, but tied to no particular cuisine. The menu changes regularly with produce selected only at its absolute best – expect unexpected combinations like expertly cooked prawn dumplings balanced on test tube chasers filled with French green mussel sauce, or chicken liver parfait whipped into a light mousse with parmesan, beetroot and coconut.

Lunchtime offers a casual 3–4 dish menu replicating a refined neighbourhood tapas bar, whilst evenings bring an immersive tasting menu at the 9-seat chef’s table. Aleksandra’s role as Director at Primeur allows Aces to serve extraordinary quality produce at accessible prices, whilst the European-leaning wine programme features bottles from small artisan growers and traditional producers, including rarities from Alex’s native Romania.

8 Pearson Square, London W1T 3BF

Dim Sum Library UK

Aqua Restaurant Group brings its acclaimed Hong Kong concept to Covent Garden – the first international outpost since launching in 2016. Chefs Jian Jia (formerly Din Tai Fung) and Dim Sum Master Leung Kwok Wah lead the kitchen, reimagining dim sum through a modern lens with signatures including Wagyu Beef Puff with Black Pepper, Dan Dan Xiao Long Bao, and Black Garlic Siu Mai. A dim sum creation station at the entrance lets guests watch chefs at work.

MA/NA

Thanks to Floella for this one. The Thesleff Group opens its first Mayfair venue this January at 30 Upper Grosvenor Street. MA/NA combines modern Mayfair elegance with Japanese energy, flowing from refined dining into an after-dark lounge. Executive Chef Leonard Tanyag’s menu blends contemporary style with traditional Japanese techniques, featuring dishes like Scallop Dynamite Maki, Kani Tartare Salad, and Bulgogi Robata. For founder Markus Thesleff, the project is deeply personal – his father was born in Japan and his grandfather served as Finnish Ambassador in Tokyo.

30 Upper Grosvenor Street, Mayfair, W1K 7PH

Poon’s at Somerset House

Amy Poon brings her family’s restaurant dynasty into a new era, five decades after her parents opened the original Poon’s in Soho in 1970. The menu is described as Chinese home cooking, featuring dishes like “The hill that Amy didn’t die on” (sesame prawn “toast” on a lardo base), “Ode to Fuchsia” (a tribute to food writer Fuchsia Dunlop), and Zha Jiang Aubergine in Poon’s signature Lisle Street sauce. Find the entrance via the New Wing on Lancaster Place rather than the main courtyard.

Claridges Bakery

Opening 21st January 2026, Claridge’s new bakery on Brook’s Mews is led by internationally acclaimed baker Richard Hart (Hart Bageri Copenhagen, Green Rhino Mexico City). The menu celebrates classic British baking – think Bloomers, Jammy Dodger Tarts, Belgian Buns, and Iced Fingers, alongside Hart’s renowned sourdough. Savoury options include Marmite Cheese Straws, Hampshire Pork Scotch Eggs, and Claridge’s Sausage Roll.

Vegan, Vegetarian (£37) and Pescetarian (£47) menus available.

100 Bishopsgate Tower, London EC2M 1GT

What’s Coming Up in January

It’s a busy start to the new year. Plans so far include a visit to Jay Rayner’s favourite Sunday lunch restaurant. I’ve also got a few days planned revisiting Madeira – Funchal is home to some lovely restaurants, if you are planning a visit to Madeira I will report back on my culinary experience. Once back, I’m very much looking forward to eating at Brother Marcus and breakfast or brunch at the decadent L’ETO Caffe. Oh, nearly forgot – a birthday lunch at Starling. There are not too many positives on getting older but going to Starling is one.

So that just about wraps it up for another year. It’s been a fun journey for me, and I’m so pleased to have you along for the ride. Thanks for reading – it is very much appreciated.

Finally, I absolutely insist you and yours have the very best Christmas and New Year. I look forard to catching up with you in 2026!

Best,

Harrods Bids Farewell to Celebrity Chef Partnerships in Major Dining Overhaul

Harrods is saying goodbye to several high-profile chef collaborations as part of a strategic shift towards in-house dining concepts. Following a comprehensive review of customer preferences and hospitality trends—including the move towards earlier evening dining—the Knightsbridge institution is rebalancing its food and beverage offering to focus on Harrods-owned restaurant concepts that provide all-day dining flexibility.

The changes will see some notable departures over the coming months:

  • Sushi by Masa closed on 9th August
  • Kerridge’s Fish & Chips and Calum Franklin’s evening menu at The Georgian wrap up on 31st August
  • Gordon Ramsay Burger will be the last to finish, serving final dishes on 11th January 2026

Managing Director Michael Ward praised the “fantastic chefs” Harrods has partnered with, acknowledging they’ve “served many thousands of diners” during their residencies. The Georgian will continue its award-winning afternoon tea service (recently crowned Best Contemporary Afternoon Tea in the UK), whilst new Harrods-owned dining concepts are set to launch in the coming months.

Akira Black Parts Ways with Mandarin Oriental

The Michelin-starred chef and the Mandarin Oriental have parted company after just one year. The chef’s name has been removed from all restaurants, marking the end of what was hoped to be a longer-term partnership.

Novikov

Our friends at Novikov Mayfair are elevating their already indulgent Italian offerings with two show-stopping additions that launched on 20th August. The restaurant’s new XL Ravioli takes the beloved pasta classic to luxurious new heights with oversized, handcrafted parcels available in two divine varieties – Black Truffle Carbonara Ravioli for the ultimate indulgence, and a sublime Ricotta & Spinach option for vegetarians. Alongside this pasta perfection, they’re serving up Chateaubriand, a prized centre-cut of beef tenderloin that melts in the mouth

Review the food critic

William Sitwell is taking over The White Hart in Wiveliscombe, which closed recently. He is reopening as a hotel and Italian restaurant. No doubt all those who suffered a bad review at Williams’ hands will be getting their own back.

London Oyster Championships

The legendary Bentley’s Oyster Bar & Grill are back with their fabulous annual London Oyster Championships, and darling, this is the seafood extravaganza that has Mayfair’s most discerning palates positively swooning! Mark your calendars for Friday, September 19th when Swallow Street transforms into the ultimate celebration of British native oysters and the glorious return of the season. Watch England’s most skilled shuckers battle it out in the Speed Shucking competition for the ultimate bragging rights, while the capital’s most creative chefs go head-to-head in the Best Dressed Oyster contest, dreaming up the most divine and innovative toppings that’ll have you questioning everything you thought you knew about these briny beauties. With tickets including unlimited oysters (yes, you read that right!), flowing drinks, and exclusive access to the afterparty, this is one shell of a good time that no serious foodie should miss.

Exciting New Restaurant Openings

Richoux Returns

Richoux is set for a comeback this September, opening just north of Oxford Street. Launching as a Parisian café (very much in vogue these days), the venue will operate all day, offering classic French dishes alongside pastries served from a traditional trolley.

I’m told there will be both a set-price lunch and pre-theatre menu available. Full details will follow once Richoux opens.

Rosi at The Beaumont Mayfair – October Opening

Millonaires Tart

Exciting news for October as The Beaumont Mayfair unveils Rosi, their brand new Modern British restaurant helmed by the remarkable Lisa Goodwin-Allen as Culinary Director. As one of the UK’s most celebrated female chefs and part of that exclusive Michelin-starred club, Lisa brings over two decades of experience holding a star at Northcote. She’s joining forces with Executive Chef Brendan Fyldes and newly appointed Executive Head Chef Jozef Rogulski (formerly of The Game Bird) to create something rather special in the heart of Mayfair.

What can we expect from Rosi? Think reimagined British classics with Lisa’s signature playful twist – seasonal showstopper pies, impeccably sourced steaks including English Wagyu and Lake District beef, and desserts with proper tableside theatre. The Mayfair Millionaire’s Tart particularly caught my eye with its cheeky nod to the neighbourhood’s affluence! The restaurant design is moving away from The Colony Grill’s clubby feel towards something brighter and more characterful – perfect for both locals and visitors. Reservations open soon, and I suspect this one will be rather popular given Lisa’s reputation and The Beaumont’s pedigree.

Brother Marcus opens in Soho

Brother Marcus is making a bold move into the heart of Soho this autumn, taking over the former Social Eating House site on Poland Street. London’s beloved East-Mediterranean brand—renowned for their relaxed weekend brunches and generous hospitality—will transform the space into an 84-cover restaurant spread across two floors.

What can we expect? Think mezze-style sharing plates bursting with bold, fresh flavours, contemporary design that feels both sophisticated and welcoming, plus free-flowing Greek wine to accompany that signature East-Med warmth we’ve come to love from Brother Marcus.

It’s quite a leap from their existing locations into prime Soho territory, but given their track record for creating that perfect weekend brunch atmosphere, this could be exactly what Poland Street needs. The question is: can they translate their laid-back charm to a bustling Soho crowd?

Coming Up Next Month…

Shock horror, dear reader! Possibly only one restaurant review next month, with a visit to Michelin-starred Trivet. Don’t worry though—I’ll be enjoying plenty of exceptional food (hopefully) with trips to Lisbon, then onto Porto to board a river cruise down the Douro, back for a few days, then to Spain for a week in La Manga for more great food, golf, and my first attempt at padel tennis.

Don’t worry, there will be plenty of news and gossip in our next newsletter at the end of the month. Please follow my exploits during the month on Instagram [@themayfairfoodie].

Until next time, keep eating well and thanks so much for taking the time to read,

Dear Fellow Foodie,

As we dive into the peak UK holiday season, this newsletter features an al fresco dining special, alongside our usual news and gossip.

A Quick Round-Up of My Month

Josephines-Parisian Brasserie

I’ve added two new reviews this month. First, I visited Josephine Marylebone, Claude and Lucy Bosi’s venture, which opened in April. It showcases classics from Parisian brasseries. I went in with high expectations and left delighted.

Next, I returned to Novikov, this time to their iconic Asian restaurant. The feast was fantastic, with many highlights including the spicy prawn money bags—truly exceptional.

I also attended the opening night party at Piccolino’s in the Tower Bridge Hilton which was great fun. The new restaurant looked stunning and although attached to the hotel had its own identity. Located ina busy part of town I think the third Piccolino’s in London is going to do very well.

June 2025 Newsletter

Hi Fellow Foodie,

Welcome to our June newsletter, featuring all the “hot” news. I couldn’t resist referencing the current heatwave we’re enjoying or enduring if you’re travelling into London.

We are halfway into 2025, it’s frightening how quickly time flies. So with a mountain of news to share today, lets get into it and start with a quick round-up of my June. The Pie-signature dish at The Punchbowl

Two reviews: My first visit to Judy’s at The Punchbowl. The pub was once famed for being owned by Guy Ritchie but is now under the ownership of Butcombe Brewing Company and becoming famous for its food including the pie!

Click here to read my reviewCheers!

Another first: Bottomless brunch at Bocconcino’s – my first experience of a bottomless brunch. I’ve heard that the food at bottomless brunches sometimes can feel like an afterthought, but not at Bocconcino’s, it was a a fantastic lunch and had a great vibe. Highly recommended for celebrations especially as its a all inclusive price.

A tough assignment: Researching the seven best food pubs in Mayfair was such an ardous task, what a tough job. I eventually managed to picked out 7 of my favourite Mayfair food pubs, all in my humble opinion are well worth a visit.

New Restaurant Openings

  • Is Mazi is Coming to Mayfair?
Rumours are circulating that Mazi, the popular Notting Hill Greek restaurant, is set to open on foodie-favourite Bruton Place, opposite the Guinea Grill. I’ve have also heard rumours of a Martini Bar and an Italian restaurant adding to the foodie options in this lovely street.
  • Shanghai Me – Hilton on Park Lane

Coming Up Next Month…

I’m thrilled to be visiting two restaurants that have long been on my wish list: Novikov Asia and Claude and Lucy Bosi’s Josephine in Marylebone. From all the reports I’ve heard, I’m in for a treat, and I’ll report back on both restaurants next month.

Also on the list is a return visit for Sunday lunch at 108 Brasserie this sunday. You might recall my review of their Sunday roast last year – I’m looking forward to a return visit. I’ve been invited to the launch event of the new Piccolino in the Tower Bridge Hilton on the 16th, it is the first Hotel based restaurant for Piccolino so I’m interested to see it.

Finally, if time permits I might try one of the special lunch menu’s we have featured recently, any excuse.

Following June’s recipes, I can’t wait to get back in the kitchen to cook a few more dishes. I’m also keen to learn and perfect some classic sauces, so I might feature my attempts – as long as they’re successful!

Until next month,

May 2025 Newsletter

Fellow foodie,

May came and went in a blink for me, mainly as I was away for half of it. Trips included a golf (and eating) trip to the Algarve, then a visit to Jersey over their liberation weekend, a weekend in Brighton and as this newsletter hits your inbox I’m on an impromptu trip to Poland for a few days. Pink Panther evening at Franco’s

However, I did get out and about on website work this month. It included Franco’s Pink Panther Rose party. Franco’s has a welcome to spring and summer party. The tradition has been going on for 20 years; it involves many choices of Rosé wine to sample and canapes from Franco’s kitchen, so a good time was guaranteed.Friends of Kaspia evening and chicken nuggets

Friends of Kaspia- Sometimes an email drops into your inbox that just screams yeeees! One such email arrived inviting me to the Friends of Kaspia evening. The email started with “We’re thrilled to introduce you to something a little decadent, a little exclusive—and entirely delicious.” So obviously I’m hooked. Reading further down the email, I see the mention of chicken nuggets. Now, given that Caviar Kaspia’s signature dish is a baked potato topped with caviar, I have an inkling what’s in store for us.

 Veeraswamy’s

Worrying news, Veeraswamy, is facing an uncertain future as its landlords, the Crown Estate, threaten closure over a lease dispute. Nestled in the heart of Regent Street for an impressive 99 years, this Michelin-starred establishment is not just the UK’s oldest Indian restaurant; it’s a cherished institution that has welcomed legendary figures including Marlon Brando, Audrey Hepburn, Mahatma Gandhi, and even King Charles during his time as Prince of Wales.

The current predicament revolves around a mere 11 sq m (120 sq ft) space at the entrance of Victory House, where Veeraswamy spans four glorious floors of Indian cuisine. The restaurant’s chairman has voiced concerns over this dispute, which could ultimately lead to the loss of Veeraswamy.

April 2025 Newsletter

Hi Fellow Foodie,

Lets start this newsletter with a catch on new posts on the Mayfair Foodie website in April. We start with a few reviews of restaurants I visited recently.Delamina Townhouse

Delamina Townhouse

I had the pleasure of visiting Delamina Townhouse in Covent Garden, a long-awaited experience after thoroughly enjoying their Marylebone location last year. My anticipation was certainly justified, as we enjoyed an exceptional lunch that exceeded all expectations. If you find yourself in Covent Garden—or even if you’re not—this gem comes highly recommended!

Sunday Roast at the Chesterfield Arms

Early in April, I enjoyed a Sunday roast at The Chesterfield Arms in Shepherd Market. It’s always a treat to have Sunday lunch prepared for you. Their new roast offering was excellent. Additionally, I was introduced to a lobster thermidor served on a sourdough crumpet as a starter, which was worth the price of admission on its own.

Bocconcino Soho

Next up, just before Easter, I enjoyed lunch at Bocconcino’s in Soho. This time, our star dish was Gambero Rosso; these beautiful red prawns were served on a bed of fresh tagliolini, accompanied by bottarga and shellfish sauce. I do believe in the review, I might have made a comment about prawns being photogenic, did I really say that?

I mentioned in last months newsletter that I was hoping to sample the special West of India menu at Masala Zone that was introduced until . Thankfully, I made it, as the food was delicious. Although this special menu ends tomorrow, I hope they repeat this idea with other regions of India in the future. Below is a picture of one of our tables favourite dishes Goan Spiced Crab cake, it was so good.Goan Spiced Crab cake

Today I’m off to Bruton Place’s new restaurant addition, SiLVA restaurant. Bruton Place is fast becoming one of London’s best foodie streets. Having heard so many very good reports about SiLVA, I’m looking forward to lunch. My review will be published by Wednesday next week; however, look out for pics on Instagram today and over the weekend.

Only one recipe this month, but if you are a fan of Spag Bol you must give my slow-cooked version a go. I’ve been cooking this recipe for years, and I have no idea where I found the recipe from, but the slow cooking really enhances the flavour; it really is worth trying. See recipe here

Franco’s annual Rosé Party

Franco’s

Founded in 1945, Franco’s is one of London’s oldest Italian restaurants, known for its classic elegance and hospitality. This year marks the 20th anniversary of its beloved rosé event, celebrating the arrival of spring and summer in St. James’s.

Tuesday, 29th April, Franco’s will host its annual Rosé Party, featuring a fun theme inspired by the Pink Panther. Attendees can look forward to an exquisite selection of rosé wines, delightful canapés, and vibrant entertainment, all in the signature style of Franco’s. The festivities kick off at 6 PM, and tickets are available for purchase on Franco’s website.

Bargin-ish Set Menu’s

Continuing our search for restaurant bargain menus, we have a few more varied suggestions.

Kitty Fishers

Kitty’s is a high-end restaurant tucked away in Shepherd Market. They are now offering what they call a workers’ lunch menu, the menu changes weekly, so check their website for details, but for two courses it’s £30 and for three courses £33.

 10 Shepherd Market, London W1J 7QF

Sael

Jason Atherton’s Sael has launched a new spring prix fixe menu, featuring two courses for £25 and three for £28. Available lunchtime and 5 pm -6.30 pm.

1 St James’s Market, London SW1Y 4QQ

The Maine Mayfair

The New England restaurant offer a Lunch Prix Faire menu offers a choice of 6 starters, mains, and four desserts for two courses £35, and three for £40

6, Medici Courtyard, London W1S 1JY

Bentley’s Oyster Bar and Grill

Richard Corrigan’s legendary seafood restaurant offers a Set lunch and pre-theatre menu for £35 for 2 courses and £39 for 3.

11-15 Swallow St, Piccadilly, London W1B 4DJ

Tom Brown at the Capital

As mentioned last month, Tom Brown opened at the Capital. While on the face of it this might seem like much of a bargain as they offer a lunch menu of three courses for £50. However, I have it on good authority from people who have been there that the food is on another level, so get in quickly.

24, 22 Basil St, London SW3 1AT

New Restaurants opening in May

Marjorie’s

This restaurant opening caught my attention mainly because it the same name as my mum; however, with head chef and part-owner Giacomo Peretti, formerly from Le Gavroche, this part wine bar and restaurant sounds like it could be worth a visit. We are told the menu will be a modern take on French cuisine, but still respecting classic technique, that possibly translates to giving the chef to add his twist to the French classics.

26 Fouberts Place, Soho, W1F 7PP

Chez Roux

Michel Roux’s long-awaited new restaurant opening at the Langham hotel on the 22nd May, the new restaurant features food from Michel’s childhood memories in the 1960’s, for most of us of a similar era this could make for a pretty dull menu, but I suspect for Michel it might mean something slightly more exotic.

1c Portland Place, London, W1B 1JA

Josephine Marylebone

After the huge success with the first Josephine in Chelsea, Claude and Lucy Bosi have just opened in Marylebone. Expect excellent classic Bistro French food.

 6-8 Blandford St, London W1U 4AU

Coming up next month..

Earlier we cited earlier Francos’s are having their annual Rosé Party, and I’m lucky enough to be going along to taste some of Franco’s delicious canapes and enjoy a glass or two of rosé, so expect some pretty pictures of the food and drinks if the camera operator sticks to only two glasses rosé.

I’m away from the 1st to the 5th of May, losing golf balls and hopefully enjoying fine fare in the Algarve, then back two days before heading to Jersey for three nights, when I’m in Jersey I always find time to eat at the Oyster Box in St Brelades Bay, it’s a must visit for me on any visit to Jersey.Caviar Kaspia

Once back in Mayfair I’m going to the first Friends of Kaspia evening at Cavia Kaspia. To give you a flavour of the evening, I’ve copied the following introduction from the invite (no apologies as their description sounded better than I ever could write). It sounds like might be a fun night…

Friends of Kaspia is a brand-new series of curated soirées hosted at Caviar Kaspia London, taking place once a month. These evenings are designed to bring together tastemakers, creatives, and our most treasured guests for a glamorous night at the bar with a live DJ, signature cocktails, and a special treat that’s already catching attention:our viral chicken nuggets are topped with Caviar Kaspia’s finest.

If you have not read my review of Caviar Kaspia and the story behind the signature dish of Baked potatoe, its worth a read.

Finally, do let me know any restaurants that you have enjoyed recently and any you would like to feature on the website.

Thats all I’ve got time for, so many thanks as always for reading, I will speak to you again at the end of May.

Best wishes,

Martin

March 2025 Newsletter

Welcome, fellow foodie,

I can’t believe we have nearly completed the first quarter of 2025. Where does the time go?

My month started when I was invited to the Hot Dinners Annual Murphia event at the Marylebone Hotel. The event celebrates everything good about the Irish food scene.

In addition to Guinness, we were treated amongst other delights to Irish oysters, cheeses, and beef treats.  It was great fun chatting with suppliers and the many foodie guests. Oh, I forgot I finished the evening with a cheeky baby Guinness—very nice it was too.

I added a new article on the Best Sunday Roasts in Mayfair. I had so much fun writing this that I got carried and added a few of my favourite Sunday Roasts from outside Mayfair as well.Best Sunday Roasts in Mayfair

Reviews this month take an unexpected twist, not a restaurant review insight. However, as something different, I have added product and experience review.

First, the experience review: The nice people at Gourmaze asked me to go on a foodie treasure hunt and write up my honest opinions, which was quite brave. However, if you are looking for something different as a foodie experience in London, you might like this. Judging by the friends I have mentioned it to, most are keen to have a go. If I have piqued your interest, please take a few minutes to read below and learn more about Gourmaze.

Gourmaze Experience

Next up is my first product review. Last summer I bought a trio of HexClad pans as a pre-kitchen refurb present to myself, However, it was December before I could get my hands on these little beauties and about a week ago I published my thoughts in form of a review. Most new posts take a while start to get a good volume of traffic however this post from day two has large numbers of views, lets hope it continues, in one way I’m obviously delighted but in another way disappointed as I dont think its my most creative piece of writing. Anyhow, you can judge for yourself below.

Hexclad Pans review

I added a couple of my favourite recipes: my twist on the classic Prawn cocktail and Sausage and fennel pasta. Both are super easy and well within my limited skill levels. The seafood cocktail makes an lovely seafood starter, and the sausage pasta a comfort food supper.

I did have a lovely lunch at Delamina Townhouse in Covent Garden, for those of you with good memories, might remember I reviewed Delamina Marylebone last year, their latest restaurant is different in terms of vibe and decor, which is nice but I’m so happy to report back that the food is excellent. I was lucky enough to share the table with two very good foodie friends. My review will be published on the website in a week or so.

Ok, thats enough of my foodie month, now onto the latest news

This time, the setting is the newly renovated Montcalm hotel in Mayfair, now known as Montcalm Mayfair. The restaurant, named Lilli by Akira Back, aims to celebrate his Korean heritage while offering modern takes on traditional British cuisine. Even with the opening approaching, details are still limited.

One Club Row, an elegant dining room featuring chef Patrick Powell at the helm, will open in early April on the upper floor of the newly launched Knave of Clubs pub. Powell has curated a menu of classic bistro dishes. Powell, who previously worked at Allegra and The Midland Dining Room, has found a new home in this Grade II-listed building in Shoreditch. In addition to the dining room, he will also be offering pub snacks downstairs.

Coming up next Month

As mentioned earlier, I will be publishing a review on my visit to Delamina Townhouse; I’m also keen to sample the West of India-themed menu at Masala Zone at some point in April. Next up a visit to Boccocino Soho and two restaurants on Bruton Place: the new addition in Bruton Place, Silva, and chef Larry Jayasekara’s Cocochine. I’ve heard excellent reports about both restaurants.Cocochine in Bruton Place

Following up on my Sunday Lunch feature, I’m eating at the Chesterfield Arms soon sampling their new Roasts menu, which I’m looking forward to.

Due to the success of my first product review, I might be tempted to do another. I also have a couple of recipes up my sleeve that might appear on the website next month.

Finally, we are spending a few days in Wales celebrating my sister-in-law’s special birthday. She has hired a large house that comfortably holds 24 people, along with bar in a converted barn, I don’t think it will be a quiet affair, but it should be a lot of fun.

Have a lovely Easter

According to news from Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants, they taking over the former  Le Gavroche restaurant site. No news as yet on when and what type of restaurant will occupy this famous venue; however, I have a hunch Mr Ramsay will throw everything at it.

Masala Zone

Masala Zone West coast of India menu

/Masala Zone has taken the brave and exciting step of ditching its regular menu for the next eight weeks and replacing it with dishes from the West Coast of India. You can enjoy all the West Coast has to offer in Masala Zones’ four London restaurants.

Dishes are from the Northwestern Coast of Gujarat to the Southwest tip of India in Kerala, passing through Mumbai and Goa. The new menu includes Mumbai Bombay Vada Pao sliders, Goan spiced crab cakes, a traditional seabream Goa fish curry, a Kerala Baby squid chilli fry, and an Alleppey Prawn Curry.

This is a great idea and will undoubtedly be a big success; you can try the new menu until 27 April.

Hakkasan Hanway Place

After 24 years, today is the last day of service for the original Hakkasan at Hanway Place. I remember going there about 15 years ago and being star-struck by the number of celebs dining in the restaurant. More importantly, the food was excellent. The Hakkasan in Mayfair will remain open.

Admiralty Arch project

Some exciting news was announced this week. Clare Smyth of Core by Clare Smyth, and renowned international restaurateur Daniel Boulud have been appointed as chef partners at the Waldorf Astoria Admiralty Arch, a new hotel scheduled to open in 2026. Each chef will launch a restaurant within the prestigious Grade 1 listed landmark, offering views along The Mall toward Buckingham Palace. This hotel will mark the first Waldorf Astoria in the UK as the Hilton group revamps the building into a luxurious 100-bedroom establishment.

Best value award

At the recent Good Food Guide Awards, The Devonshire desevedly won the award for Best Value Lunch Menu with it’s three-course lunch offering: starter, main, and pudding for £29, Seafood starter, Steak Skirt main, and treacle toffee pudding for dessert.

Here are my top three Mayfair alternatives,

Noble Rot Mayfair (daily set lunch menu three courses £28)

Mary’s (pre-fixe menu two courses £34)

Langans Brasserie (Three-course pre-fix menu £35)

On the theme of outstanding value, Osteria del Mare offers a happy hour special: 3 oysters and a glass of prosecco for a bargain price of £10, available from 3 pm to 6 pm.

New Restaurant openings in March

Officina 00

Officina 00 opened its third restaurant in Covent Garden, and we had the pleasure of reviewing their Fitzrovia restaurant last year.

 8-10 Dryden St, London WC2E 9NA

Nina

Nina is a new restaurant that has taken over Pachamama’s previously occupied space. Like its sister restaurants, Zephyr and Bottarga, Nina specialises in Mediterranean cuisine.

18 Thayer St, London W1U 3JY

La Môme, The Berkeley

A long-awaited opening taking over the space left when Marcus Wareing closed his Michelin-starred restaurant last year. La Môme brings the essence of the French Riviera to the city centre. Situated in the renowned Berkeley Hotel, a legendary and historic location, Antoine & Ugo Lecorché are launching their first international endeavour. With views of Hyde Park in the stylish Belgravia district, La Môme London embodies the grace and spirit of its forerunners, offering a delightful taste of the Dolce Vita.

Claude Bosi-Jospephine Bouchon

Chef Claude Bosi and his wife, Lucy, opened the French Bouchon Josephine in Chelsea last year to rave reviews. We’ve been hearing rumors for some time that the chef is planning a follow-up restaurant in a much more central location.

Thanks to information from one of our sources, we now know exactly where the new Josephine will open. Bosi is taking over the space previously occupied by Daylesford Organic, a fairly large location on Blandford Street in Marylebone. Although few details about the new opening have been revealed, we will keep you posted.

Coming next month…

I will add more recipes (fingers crossed, another special guest recipe); I’m planning more restaurant visits, including a trip to taste Masalsa Zones’ new menu.  Look out for my article  “Best Sunday Lunches in Mayfair,” which I hope to publish on the website soon. Also, I plan to write restaurant guides on Mayfair’s neighbouring districts, starting with Marylebone; fingers crossed, I will be finished before the next newsletter.

Finally, I came across this film about the life of the great Keith Floyd. Floyd’s 1980s TV programme opened the door for celebrity TV chefs. His funny, chaotic, and unique style wasa huge hit with the British public and spiked interest in the world of food and travel. He was a natural in front of the camera. It is well worth a watch.

Well, thats is about for now; thanks as always for letting me take up a few minutes of your time.

Have a good March

January 2025 Newsletter

Hi, Fellow foodies,

With the year’s first month nearly done and dusted, it’s time to catch up with some foodie news since we last spoke. I can’t pretend to be a fan of January (even though I have a birthday early in the month). It’s a hard month, and I see no reason to make it much harder by attempting a dry January. However, I do secretly admire those that do.Mary’s Onion soup

Anyhow, my January has been busy, I finally got down to adding some recipes to the website, two of my own and two guest recipes, one from Gigi Grassia (@gigi_goes_vegan,) who launched her first book in January and donated a fantastic recipe from the book to us called Marry me lentils, the second came from the team at Wylde market and called Mary’s onion soup, trust me this soup worth making. While mentioning Wylde, they kindly gave us a discount code for £20 off your first order. Please check out their website. I ordered fish, meat, and vegetables; the website is full of stunning produce direct from the producers. The discount code is MAYFAIR20.

Whilst talking about recipes ,it is about time you sent me your favourite recipe. It would be great to feature it on the website; come on, you know you want to.

Apart from recipes, I’ve been reviewing a couple of restaurants for the website. First up was Sunday Brunch at Bocconcino’s in Mayfair. It is a buffet with an eat-as-you-want option and a selection of hot dishes to order. Needless to say, just like everybody there, we did eat too much, and it was a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon: great food, entertainment, and unlimited bubbles—what’s not to like?Fish counter at Osteria Del Mare

Next up is a new Covent Garden fish restaurant that opened in December, Osteria Del Mare in Covent Garden. The food was excellent, and the decor was stunning. Read my review here.

I had a lot of fun writing an article on “The Best Breakfast Spots in Mayfair.” The article includes a selection of good-value restaurants and a few very special options if you are pushing the boat out or celebrating early in London.

I have a confession to make with my Christmas foodie quiz: I made an error on the question in the drink section, Question 7, “What country does Alberino come from?” The answer, of course, is Spain. I originally had the Italian wine Primitivo as my question but then changed it because I thought it was too easy. Like an idiot, I forgot to change the answer. Thanks to Tina for pointing out my error. If you correctly answered Spain, I humbly apologise.

Restaurant openings In London

In addition to the aforementioned Osteria Del Mare, below are a few of new restaurants that opened in January.

Rake at the Compton Arms

Rake is the new resident at the Compton Arms in Islington, serving British favourites, including ray wing crumpets and their signature hot dogs.

Voyage with Adam Simmonds

Adam Simmonds is taking over The Megaro Hotel at Kings Cross, serving Scandinavian-influenced food.

Prince Arthur, Belgravia

This is not your everyday pub. Prince Arthur boasts a fishmonger’s counter and its own caviar. Upstairs, there is a restaurant serving Basque dishes like lobster rice with Saffron aioli—no stale cheese rolls here. I’m told the pub serves Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone larger; of course, it does.

Noodle and Beer

A new addition in Soho’s Wardour Street, serving Sichuan noodles and an interesting and varied selection of beers. The signature dish is Chongqing noodles and Xiao Mian; it’s a traditional breakfast dish in Chongqing but makes a wonderful spicy accompaniment to the beer.

The Great Indian

A new Indian Gastro pub in Archway, now you can stay in the pub and still go for a curry. With Indian classics on the menu, plus a few surprises, like coastal chilly-tamarind prawn dosa.

Ramsay Bishopsgate

Up-and-coming chef called Gordon Ramsay is opening in 22 Bishopsgate Tower in February in what will be London’s highest dining room. He will try to elevate his dishes to match the location (did I really write that).

Selene

Selene enters the list as a bit of an imposter as it’s a nightclub, whatever that is!

I’m told Selene is London’s newest nightlife destination, set to open in the West End. Named after the Greek goddess of the moon, it features multiple themed rooms, vibrant performances inspired by Greek mythology, and music from top house DJs.

Located just off Oxford Street on Winsley Street, the venue includes a room dedicated to ancient Greece, an intimate garden-inspired space for electronic music, and a hidden area with a duckpin bowling alley for small gatherings.

With luxurious decor, bold colours, and clever lighting, Selene aims to offer an unforgettable escape, making it the must-visit venue in the Capital’s nightlife.

What’s on next Month

Claridges

From February 17th to 22nd, 2025, Claridge’s Restaurant will host a special residency with Hotel Il Pellicano, bringing a taste of Tuscany right to Mayfair. Chef Michelino Gioia will create delightful Italian dishes using the best ingredients, while barman Federico Morosi will whip up some refreshing cocktails. Are you planning to check it out?his February legendary hotels Claridge’s and Hotel Il Pellicano join forces to bring some dolce vita flair to Mayfair with Il Pellicano’s one-week residency at Claridge’s Restaurant from Monday 17th – Saturday 22nd February 2025. Bringing some much-welcomed sunshine to London during the winter months, Chef Michelino Gioia and his team will serve up an abundance of Tuscany’s flavoursome ingredients with his signature Italian dishes, alongside legendary barman Federico Morosi, who’ll be mixing up some of his famous cocktails.

Bibi

On Saturday, February 22nd, Chef Chet Sharma is excited to welcome his good friend, Chef Endo Kazutoshi, from the Michelin-starred Endo At The Rotunda, for a special dining experience at BiBi.

These two talented chefs have been friends for a long time and are joining forces for a delightful event that celebrates their bond and passion for great ingredients. Thanks to Ruinart, the menu will be a wonderful fusion of their culinary styles, featuring Endo’s traditional Edomae sushi from Tokyo and Chet’s amazing spice creations. It’s sure to be a fantastic evening of delicious flavours and great company!

Bellemy’s 20th Anniversary Dinner

Gavin Rankin patron of Bellamy’s

On February 24th, the Good Food Guide is hosting a special evening at Bellamy’s, located on Bruton Place, to celebrate the restaurant’s 20th anniversary. The event will feature a three-course dinner showcasing Bellamy’s signature dishes and a discussion led by patron Gavin Rankin, who will share insights into the highs and lows of running this iconic Mayfair restaurant. Tickets are selling fast but can be purchased on the Good Food Guide website.

Valentines Day

Veeraswamy

Dilruba Chicken

Michelin-starred Veeraswamy, London’s oldest Indian restaurant, is adding a very special dish to its menu to celebrate Valentine’s day; from the 14th-20th of Feb, Dilruba chicken, I’m told Dilruba means “the one who steals the heart”! It looks stunning and almost too good to eat; I did say almost.

Delamina Townhouse

Delamina Townhouse, Covent Garden offers a special 6-course Valentines menu for a bargain £52pp. The evening begins with a champagne cocktail and a vibrant selection of dips and finger foods. The menu then progresses through dishes featuring the finest ingredients from earth, land, and sea. To round off the meal, guests can enjoy a selection of the most loved desserts, leaving them with a sweet conclusion to a memorable dining experience. I have met the head chef and co-owner, Limor Chen, and I can safely say this will be a very special dinner; she is a very talented chef. See menu here

Akira Back

Situated in the newly built Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, acclaimed Chef Akira Back’s restaurant Akira Back and cocktail concept and rooftop bar, ABar Rooftop invites guests to celebrate ‘Love Above London’ and ‘Love below London’ for Valentine’s Day in breathtaking spaces. More details is on their website.

Novikov

Novikov has created a special dessert and cocktail menu available for this romantic occasion. Guests will be able to try the special Valentine’s Lovebirds dessert priced at £15, while sipping on a Strawberry Negroni, with Gin, Strawberry infused Campari, Sweet Vermouth. Alternatively guests can enjoy a Red Passion drink, with Rose’ Vermouth, Strawberry & Cherry Wine, Lemon, Amaro Bitter, both cocktails priced at £18.

Piccolino

Italian restaurant group Piccolino’s Valentine’s menu will be available from February 10th to 16th, accompanied by a special Valentine’s cocktail for each diner. Check their website for full details of the offer.

What’s coming up on the Mayfair Foodie

From the 3rd to the 19th Feb, I’m going to be away from Mayfair and excited to say I’m on a mini tour of  Asia for two weeks, starting in Bangkok, then Seim Reap, Cambodia, and finally spending a week in Vietnam visiting Hoi An, Hanoi, and Ha Long bay in Vietnam.  I will post mini foodie updates on my Instagram page (@themayfairfoodie) and, of course, report back in the Feb newsletter. Any recommendations are welcome if you have visited any of the places we are going to.

When I return, I have an interview scheduled with a co-owner of one of the busiest restaurants in Mayfair. I also plan to visit a couple of restaurants, including a special breakfast at a bakery in Tbilisi. Additionally, I’m starting to compile a list of the “Best Sunday Lunches” in Mayfair, and as is often the case, I will include some recommendations from neighbouring areas. If you’ve had a fantastic Sunday lunch in central London, please send me the details so I can include them in my list.

I’m also going to be busy adding all your fantastic recipes to the website🤔

Awards season is here.

Finally, it’s award season! The highly anticipated 2025 Michelin Awards will be announced on February 10th. In addition, the Good Food Guide awards will take place next week, and this week, the list of the 50 Best Gastro Pubs in Britain was released.

Well, it is time for me to shut down my laptop, and I have a lot to do before my holiday; thanks, as always, for reading.

Have a good February, and I will speak to you in the next newsletter.

Latest News Published 19th January

Hi Fellow Foodies,

As this is the first newsletter of 2024, it is still ok to wish you a Happy New Year (just}.

A warm welcome to you all.

It’s been a busy but fun start to the year for me and the website. Two reviews, a visit to the exciting and innovative Thai restaurant Kiln Soho. It is the first time I have seen Kippers and whitebait on the menu of a Thai restaurant, and then last week, lunch at the Shepherd Market gastro pub, The Chesterfield Arms. The signature dish at the Chesterfield arms-Beef Wellington

That sums up why I like what I do so much, from the hustle and bustle of a Thai kitchen restaurant to the comparatively sedate calm of an English pub restaurant. They are totally different restaurants, but both are equally good.

I’ve also fulfilled a promise to add a few more recipes to the website, and enjoyed cooking them and then even more fun trying to remember them.

Before I forget, Father Christmas did deliver two new cookbooks, Sabrina Gayhour’s Flavour and Hoppers The Cookbook, a book showcasing Sri Lankan recipes.

Sabrina’s new book is a mix of Middle Eastern cuisine and some fun recipes, samosa pasta and Chinese-inspired chilli lamb (based on Chinese Chill beef). Both dishes sound worth a go.

Hopper’s cookbook reminds me of the Dishoom cookbook, showcasing recipes from their restaurants. I cooked the devilled chicken, and it went down well. If you like Asian food, I can highly recommend it.

Special Offers and News

Noble Rot Mayfair, nominated in the Good Food Guide awards  “Best New Restaurant of the Year” category, has a cracking lunch offer: two courses for £22 and 3 courses for £26. The menu changes daily, so check the website for details.

The Devonshire in Soho has created a bit of a storm since it opened 12 weeks ago; they have a set menu of Prawn & Langoustine cocktail, Skirt steak & chips and for Puds, sticky toffee pudding £29

Corinthia London has announced an Afternoon Tea Sale (two for one) for the month of January for their signature Traditional Afternoon Tea, which is offered in the Crystal Moon

Lounge in the heart of the hotel. Valid until 31 January 2024, it is ideal for tables of two, four or up to six guests (giving one, two or three of them a free tea!).

With 31 restaurants across the UK, Individual Restaurants are offering guests 50% off in January when they are a member of Club IR.

Throughout January, guests can enjoy 50% off food at any group’s restaurants: Piccolino, Mayfair, Piccolo by Piccolino, Riva Blu and Restaurant Bar & Grill. The offer applies to any dish on the à la carte menu and is available Monday – Thursday every week in January.

Full details can be found here: https://individualrestaurants.com/50-off-food-in-january/

Jason Atherton’s  Little Social restaurant offers a Prix Fixe menu for £27 for three courses, Lunchtime and early evening.

The award-winning Pub and restaurant The Barley Mow Mayfair are launching a breakfast menu starting 26th February. No more details as yet, but you will be the first to know as soon as I have them. Judging by the food in the Barley Mow, it will be very special, a great way to kick off any celebration in town.

Regarding breakfast, I received a recommendation from a good friend in the Industry that Masala Zone in Piccadilly has recently launched a breakfast menu at their stunning flagship restaurant. By all accounts, she said it was excellent, and thats good enough for me. I had a peek at the menu, and the Bacon & Masala Omelette Toastie Naan has my name on it. Do let me know if you go.

Just before Christmas, I was shocked and disappointed to hear that Hush was closing. Hush has been a Mayfair favourite for years; you can still get your Hush fix at their Holborn restaurant. The news is that Soho House has snapped up the fantastic building and location of Hush. I assume they will open a restaurant, and I requested info, but as we speak, I am still waiting to hear back.

The Guinea Grill (we reviewed in December) is closed for two months while they refurbish and add 60 more covers and a private dining area. To add the additional room they have taken over the premises next door. They reopen early March.

That’s about it for today, but the first in a series of articles about sustainability in hospitality will be on the recently opened 1 Hotel Mayfair and how they are managing to offer a sustainable option in the luxury hotel market.

Thanks for reading, and have a lovely weekend

Martin

P.S. My New Year resolution is to keep the newsletters shorter. I think I’ve just about managed it 😀

Christmas Newsletter

Christmas Greetings, Fellow Foodies,

If you are like me, you are running around trying to fit in last-minute shopping, work, and, most importantly, some festive time in the kitchen.

So, with that in mind, this will be a short & sweet newsletter.

I have been on frequent visits to Mayfair this month, and it is so Christmassy; if you get a chance to go to Mayfair over the holidays, here are a few of my highlights that might be worth taking a look at:

Annabels Christmas display on the facade (on Berkley Square)

The Louis Vuitton Christmas Tree at Claridges

Christmas pudding decorations in Fortnum & Mason (this is so good)

Hedonism Wines Christmas Market feature

20,000 silk roses that light up Grosvenor Square

The Christmas mini outside Koyn restaurant  Grosvenor Street

Plans for next year

A lot more of the same but bigger &  better. I have a few interviews in the pipeline of high-profile chefs that have been on your TV screens a lot recently, I can’t name names until we actually sit down and chat. Needless to say, I’m very excited and wish I could tell you more, but you will be the first to know.

I’ve been lucky to eat at some fantastic restaurants this year. I hope you have enjoyed the reviews and many highlights, including sketch, Veeraswamy, Tendril, Ginza St James and my recent visit to the Guinea Grill (read here), to name a few. We want to bring you more of the same in 2024, featuring reviews on various cuisines and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.Steak selection in The Guinea Grill

Based on feedback mainly from our overseas readers, we are launching a new section bringing an in-depth look at the best hotels in the area. I contacted a few of the best hotels in the area, and they are all keen to get involved, so let’s see where we go with this feature.

If you have any hotels you would like featured, let me know.

Sustainability is a big topic in any industry, and the hospitality industry is no different, so we are looking to champion businesses or people who are making a difference in looking after our environment as well as great food and drinks.

Recipes, much to my surprise, are a very popular feature on the website; I apologise for not adding more and will aim to rectify this in 2024

Finally, regarding drinks, we continue with our popular wine of the month feature but also want to showcase more bars and the people within the drinks industry. At an event recently, I met a drinks advisor and creator; she will bring us some great tips on creating our own cocktails.

That’s about it, apart from wishing you and yours the happiest Christmas and a very healthy New Year.

I have been genuinely bowled over by the support from people within the industry and, most importantly, you, the reader.

Thanks for making the website so special

Here’s to a wonderful Christmas and a foodie New Year

Latest News Published 24th November

Fellow Foodies,

Welcome to another Mayfair Foodie newsletter

I promise to keep this one short. I see stats on my newsletters, and it always amazes me how high our open rate is, despite my best efforts to cram too much in.

So, since we last spoke, what has happened in the world of the Mayfair Foodie?

I was privileged to be invited to a special gala dinner at the Mayfair Chippy and Piper Heidsieck champagne. There were 12 guests, and we sat for a 3-course dinner.  In case you missed it, I reviewed this Mayfair institution earlier this year.

We were treated to small plates of seafood to start, followed by Classic fish & chips (Mayfair Chippy Style) and puds. Wash down with Champagne and wine. What a fantastic evening!

A week later, I found myself in Marylebone for Limor Chens’ book launch at her restaurant Delamina. Her book “My Tel Aviv Table” is a food chronicle & recipes based on growing up in Tel Aviv. Her passion for the food she grew up with and now serves at her restaurant comes out on every page. The cookbook is well-written with easy-to-follow recipes, and as Limor pointed out at the launch, a picture accompanies every recipe in the book. It was a pleasure to meet Limor, and I cannot wait to start cooking some of the recipes from the book.

A few days later, we ate at a lovely Mayfair pub, The Footman. The menu had a few nice twists. A full review of the lunch is available on the website.

This week started with dinner at the much talked about Officina 00, a full review to follow soon, but a quick heads up: it is very good and a twist on the usual Italian but without losing the Italian passion for good simple pasta dishes.  They have two restaurants, one in Fitzrovia and the other on Old Street.

Yesterday, I attended a Preview of the forthcoming World Raki Week. The lunch at award-winning Rüya’s was hosted by Douglas Blyde, Raki guru Ayça Budak and head chef Halit Deniz.

I learned more than you ever thought possible about the Raki and its flexibility as a key ingredient in cocktails. The Raki Berry crush was a revelation.

We were also treated to a special menu devised for the launch party by the head chef & Douglas; it was delicious. I will attempt to capture the event’s flavour with an article, which should be on the website by the end of next week.

Latest News

Connaught Grill

If you have always fancied eating at the Connaught Grill (ground floor of the Connaught Hotel) but thought it might be a bit lumpy, they have their winter season menu available, and a 2-course lunch is £35 and 3 courses £45. The chance to eat and visit one of the world’s most iconic and famous hotels for that price represents good value. If you are feeling flush, pop into the Connaught bar after, number five in the best bars in the world and arguably the most famous. For this ultimate experience, you can enjoy a house cocktail, gin, and tonic for £25. Why not treat yourself? I won’t tell anybody.

Sketch, London

As is the way at sketch, they transformed the famous entrance of the restaurant into a theme inspired by Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” It is stunning, and if you are nearby, pop in to take a look, you won’t be disappointed.

Florencio Pizza-Chef Patron Diego Jacquet

Argentinian Chef Patron Diego Jacquet is opening Florencio Pizza in Seymour Place. Diego’s career included working at “Casa Nicolasa” in San Sebastian, the famous El Bulli, under Ferran Adria. Then on to New York and Aquavit, the award-winning Swedish restaurant run by chef Marcus Samuelsson, so these are not going to be any ordinary Pizza’s.

Claridge Christmas Tree by Louis Vuitton

We mere mortals must endure the annual chore of putting up the Christmas tree. My job is to feed the Christmas tree lights to my wife whilst spinning around the tree. This usually takes two attempts, but one year, we managed a record-breaking four attempts. Fingers crossed that this year; we can achieve the desired effect in one go.

Meanwhile, if you are Claridges, you have Louis Vuitton to provide your tree. Well, the word tree is probably stretching it, as from looking at the picture, there is not a spruce in sight; nevertheless, it does look very impressive.

Coming Up

As we head into December and the busy Christmas season, I have only one restaurant visit in December, which is the ever-popular Guinea Grill, and it is a good way to end the year. The Guinea Grill is closing its doors for January & February for major renovations, including adding additional much-needed by taking over the next-door premises.

I know you have heard this from me before, but I will get my apron on and cook some Christmas dishes to add to our popular recipe section. So far, google reviews have given  our recipes 5-star reviews. It’s a good job they did not taste my versions😀

While discussing recipes, my favourite cookbook article has some lovely cookery book suggestions which might give some inspiration for Christmas gifts.

I will publish the review of Officina and Raki-inspired lunch at Ruya.

I’m going to add a few new Christmas cocktail recipes; I need to get down to some serious tasting for this project, as I know you would expect me to research this thoroughly🍹🍸.

I almost forgot the lovely Sherry from Hedonism has an exceptional wine of the Month for December; it’s not to be missed. Check the website next week for some great selections.

So, I hope you enjoy the next few weeks and try to stay calm with the Christmas prep. Take time to enjoy the season and spoil yourself.

As always, send any comments or let me know your dining experiences. I’m also looking for Christmas leftover recipes; I’m working on one based on Dishoom’s Lamb Raan, using Turkey leg instead of lamb. I’ll let you know how it goes.

There will be one more newsletter this year (mid-December), and then I will leave you in peace until January.

Thanks as always for reading. It would appear I’ve failed to keep it short again; I just love writing the newsletter.

 Have a good weekend.

Speak soon,

Martin

Welcome, fellow foodies,

Last Saturday, I attended a writing masterclass by Jay Rayner (food critic & journalist) on how to write about the same subject and make it interesting to you & your readers.

For somebody who spent many years writing about Promotional Merchandise, this masterclass might have come a little late in my career, but for your sake, hopefully, you might see a benefit.

Needless to say, Jay was very entertaining and made the art of good writing seem effortless. I will let you know if  Mr Rayner runs another masterclass.

The last month has been the busiest for the website. We have articles on Tendril, the must-visit Mercato Mayfair, and afternoon tea at the Beaumont Hotel,{get me).

Interview withMaunika Gowardhan

I was also privileged to interview Chef and author Maunika Gowardhan. She is passionate about bringing regional food recipes through her books and social media channels. I really enjoyed interviewing her; it is well worth a read.

Finally, prompted by my wife, I decided to cull the masses of recipe books I have, and while doing so, I thought it would be fun to list my favourite cookbooks. It is a challenging task, much like choosing your favourite albums. Are any of my selections on your bookshelf?

The cull could have been more successful, but thats is between me and you.

Kanishka by Atul Kochhar

I hope to get in the kitchen and cook my interpretation of some great recipes. Next up is a dish from Chef Maunika Gowardhan. She is confident I should not be able to ruin her dish, Rajasthani Khade Masala Ka Murgh; check the website to see how I get on. The recipe will be on there as well for you to try.

As we move quickly towards the end-of-year celebrations, I will ask a few of our friends in Mayfair to send us their favourite cocktails.

We have two restaurant visits planned for November; these will be the last of the year. But I am delighted to say we already have some great visits planned next year starting in January.

We do have some exciting new features planned for the New Year. Any suggestions you have are very welcome.

I am trying to keep my newsletters shorter ( I can hear the cheers from here), so I will send another one in a week or so with an update on Christmas offerings in Mayfair.

So, until next time, thanks as always for reading. It is very much appreciated.

Best wishes

Martin, The Mayfair Foodie

Latest News Published 25th August 2023

For the last few weeks, I have been researching for an article about “best cocktails in Mayfair.” It is a tough job, but I have managed through the alcoholic haze to put together my recommendations. It is a must-read if you are planning to embark on a night out in Mayfair. The world-famous Connaught bar

Finally, here are two new recipes for you to try: my interpretation of a Prawn Risotto dish with a twist I had recently and chicken wings & roast new potatoes tray bake. This dish has its origins in San Sebastian and has become a favourite.

Hedonism Wines

I hinted in the last newsletter that I might have some exciting news. I can now confirm that Hedonism Wines (probably the world’s best wine store) is collaborating to give us a monthly “Wine of the Month “ article. From September, we will receive exclusive recommendations from Sherry Rose Stolar & the Hedonism team, giving you the inside track to excellent wines & unearthing hidden gems wines from vineyards worldwide, a trademark feature of Hedonism.

Le Gavroche

You may have heard Le Gavroche will close in January next year. For many years this restaurant has become an institution in the restaurant world. It was one of the first UK restaurants to receive a Michelin star. Michel Roux Jnr took charge in 1991.

My thoughts: Firstly, I’m very sad as the Roux family has raised the profile of fine dining restaurants in the UK and done so much to improve the reputation of the UK restaurants as a culinary powerhouse. Le Gavroche will be sadly missed.

However, Michel Roux cited a better work-life balance as the main reason for the closure. I can emphasise with his decision running a business is stressful & time-consuming. I can only imagine the pressure of a 2 Michelin-star restaurant, especially this restaurant. At the age of 63, Michel has made the correct decision. He will focus on his other business interests, including being a regular on our TV screens. I wish him well.

L’Atelier Robuchon

One door closes, and another opens. That’s Mayfair for you. Joel Robuchon’s classic French restaurant is to relaunch in Mayfair. Andrea Cofini will be the head chef. It will open in the Autumn, 6 Clarges Street, Mayfair, W1J 8AE.

Row on 5

Jason’s Athertons  Row on 5 is described as a “flagship” restaurant over two floors in a new building on Savile Row in Mayfair – just a short walk from Pollen Street Social, his flagship since it opened to widespread acclaim in 2011. Address 5 Saville Row

Dovetale

The 1 Hotel Mayfair flagship is a masterclass in modern British cookery. Dovetale embraces the zero-waste concept of the hotel, focusing on outstanding produce and a bit of tableside theatre. Executive Head Chef in Tom Sellers.

Coming up

Our review of Japanese restaurant Ginza St James. We were lucky to be taken on a culinary journey through Japan, along with drink pairings for each dish. The review will be published next week.

As mentioned above, our first “wines of the month” feature wines selected by Sherry at Hedonism. Again, this will be out in the next few days.

An interview with Erik Lorincz, owner & founder of award-winning bar Kwant (pronounced quaint), which recently opened in its new home on Stratton Street. Kwant was previously listed in “The Best 50 Bars in the World” at its previous Heddon Street home.

I’m very much looking forward to eating & reviewing Tendril at their new permanent home in Princes Street, W1B 2LQ; fingers crossed, we are planning an interview with Chef & founder Rishim Sachdeva.

That’s about it for this time. As always, I have a busy, fun time ahead, including a few days in Maderia. I’ve already planned a few restaurant visits, including a re-visit to a fish restaurant serving the most amazing seafood platter.

Any comments or ideas on features or articles you would like to see? I love to receive your feedback, please feel free to recommend this newsletter to your family & friends. We have room in this restaurant for many more guests😀

The Berkeley, perfectly nestled between bustling Knightsbridge and leafy Belgravia, will open its rooftop – usually reserved for staying guests – to all for the rest of the Summer with a brand new bar.  The Berkeley Rooftop Bar will open for evenings, offering the ultimate alfresco destination for Londoners to soak up sweeping sunset views over Hyde Park, whilst sitting by the glistening pool.  Unrivalled views of London’s skyline will be complemented with a menu of refreshing spritz’ and Mediterranean small plates.

 Pavyllon

Pavyllon opened earlier this month at the Four Seasons Hotel in Park Lane, Yannick Alleno is one of the most decorated chefs with 15 Michelin stars across his stable of and heads up global restaurants & for the first time, opens in London.

With such a pedigree, expect the food to be very agreeable but the bill not so. The cuisine is artistically described as a British expression of French dining. Looking at the menu, it basically is whatever Yannick fancied to put on the menu with dishes from France, Italy and maybe a nod to the UK.

Il Gattopardo

Due to opening in September, Il Gattopardo comes from the same restaurant group that brought us Zuma, Poka & Bar De Pres. The Executive Chef is Massiomo  Pasquarelli, who’s previously worked with Alain Decasse and comes via Ritz Carlton Singapore. We are told 1960s Italy inspires Italian cuisine, so pasta, I’m guessing!

We are also told the restaurant will have a  hidden courtyard with a retractable roof. Judging by the weather in August, this is a very smart move.

Address 27 Albermarle Street, Mayfair W1S 4HZ

Mayfair Chippy

Afternoon Sea Week 7th-13th August

A traditional Afternoon Tea is associated with finger sandwiches, scones, pastries and cakes. However, The Mayfair Chippy, an award-winning, 1AA Rosette, Michelin Guide, quintessentially British restaurant located in the heart of Mayfair, has put its own special twist on the traditional offering. Afternoon Sea, a tower of incredible seafood for those looking for something a little more adventurous this Afternoon Tea Week.

Guests can feast on some of the freshest seafood in London. Tuck into the chilled seafood platter with Cornish crab on toast, Severn & Wye smoked salmon, pickled cockles, dressed Cornish crab, Atlantic crab claws, King prawns with Maldon rock oysters, and cooked mussels.

.To book visit: www.mayfairchippy.com

The Afternoon Sea is priced at £38.00 per person with a booking for two people minimum and must be pre-booked.

Take a look at our review of the Mayfair Chippy.

Tendril

We mentioned in a previous newsletter that Tendril has a new permanent home & I can now confirm they opened the doors last week. We wish Rishim & the team good luck. You can find Tendril, 5 Princess Street, W1B 2LQ.

St Mary’s Gate

Many thanks to everybody enquiring about my friend’s pub St Mary’s Gate Inn in Arundel West Sussex, a quick update for you.

For those who don’t know, a dear friend has taken over “The Gate” and, as we speak & has just completed six months at the pub.

A quick update: Despite the challenges of running any new business, the Pub is going from strength to strength. Scott, Sam (the manager), & the team have put in so much hard work. They have transformed the decor inside & out, created a fantastic food menu focusing on using local Sussex suppliers, and are renovating the guest bedrooms.

The locals have responded & the food sales are booming. Also, previously, the pub hardly sold any wine & now wine sales form a big part of the drink sales. Something that the team knew would happen if they provided good food.

If you are in that part of the world, could you pop in and say hello? They would love to see you.

Address: St Mary’s Gate Inn, London Rd, Arundel BN18 9BA

Lots planned for the next few months, and dare I mention the “C” word, I need to plan content for the end-of-year festivities. My plans for the next few months are plenty of restaurant visits, I’m eating at Sketch Gallery restaurant tomorrow & next week at Ginza St James. I have been looking forward to visiting both restaurants for a long time & so looking forward to reporting back.

Plenty of new articles planned; I’m finishing a piece on  “Best Cocktails in Mayfair”; it’s been a lot of fun to write.

I want to include more recipes, and I’ve been so busy with other articles that I’ve neglected the recipes section. However, I’m adding my recent interpretation of my risotto at Hush this week I think you might like it.

I’m planning to start running competitions with amazing prizes, I will restrict these to my subscribers & Instagram followers. It would be much appreciated if you could follow me on @themayfairfoodie. Watch this space first comp to be announced soon.

Finally, I plan to announce some exciting news about a new collaboration for the website, a new monthly column. I’m sorry I can’t say more now, but you will know first.

Latest News Published 5th July 2023

Since our last newsletter, there have been many new subscribers, so big “Hello” to you all.

We have published a few new articles recently. Here is a quick recap.

One highlight recently was a visit to the UK‘s oldest Indian restaurant Veeraswamy. This Michelin-starred restaurant is 97 years young, all this time based in its Regent Street home. The menu is a delightful mix of classic Indian dishes using top local British produce, all beautifully presented. The pictures alone are worth a view.

There is a fascinating article with General Manager Samual Bernard of Langan’s; amongst other topics, we discussed the renovations of the “new” Langans, including two new stunning bar areas and private dining & I was keen to find out more about how this Iconic restaurant has changed since the new owners took over in 2021.

We have two informative articles on Restaurants on Mount Steet & North Audley Street; if you consider venturing into Mayfair anytime soon, these are worth reading as they unearth some hidden gems.

I had a fantastic week away visiting family in Chicago & Milwaukee. While there, we visited some lovely independent restaurants & Milwaukee also has a fantastic food market. It felt like a mini Borough Market and was the focal point for the locals.

On Friday, I interviewed third-generation sushi Chef Taiji Maruyama, co-owner & head Chef Maru. The Shepherd Market restaurant is open evenings only.

Co-owner & Chef Taiji Maruyama

On Tuesday, Silent Pools invited me to a Gin Aroma Masterclass at Hush restaurant. We learned how to use Botanics to create different Gin flavours. At the end of the Masterclass, we made a gin aroma using Botanics. Mine was described as “spicy” by our tutor. Let’s say she was very encouraging to the novice Gin mixers.

I was back at Hush in their silent garden on Thursday lunchtime for lunch. You can soon read more about the masterclass & lunch at Hush on the website soon.

Hush & Silent Pool Gin

Hush & Silent Pool Gin announced the opening of their new secret garden at the Mayfair Restaurant. The idyllic courtyard is a great place to enjoy food & drinks this summer. The courtyard brings the taste of the Surrey countryside retreat away from the hustle & bustle of London.

They have launched a range of “Silent pool” based cocktails to celebrate. I tried (all in the name of research) the White Peach Negroni & the Hedgerow Sour during my recent visits to Hush. There are six silent pool cocktails on the menu, so there are a few more to research.

Haugen

Haugen has partnered with Aperol to create a stunning rooftop bar. Housed in a striking wooden Chalet-style structure, Haugen has partnered exclusively with the hugely popular Italian bitter apéritif, Aperol, to take over their iconic rooftop and create a brand new, tantalising cocktail menu; creating the ideal spot for guests to enjoy a tipple or two this summer.

The rooftop bar will be hard to miss as the rooftop bar is decorated in Aperol’s distinctive orange.

New Restaurants

Sheesh opened recently on the corner of Piccadilly & Dover Street. They have spent a small fortune on the renovations & the restaurant looks exactly what you would expect, considering the popularity of the first Sheesh in Chingford, famous as a celebrity haunt serving fantastic kebabs & grills. I did ask for an interview, but they refused my first & only refusal.

Sheesh

Socca -The collaboration between Two Michelin-starred Chef Claude Bosi (Bibendum )and restauranteur Samyuta Nair (Jamavar 1 Michelin Star) is an interesting one; the cuisine is French Mediterranean bistro playing homage to the coastal towns & flavours of the Riviera( I did copy the last sentence from their website-Ha-ha)

It seems a strange collaboration, but I’m hoping to review Jamavar soon, so hopefully, we can find out a little more about Socca at the same time.

Qwant (pronounced quaint) is led by the former head of The Savoy’s American Bar, Erik Lorincz. Is an award-winning bar relocated to Stratton Street from its former home in Heddon Street? Once an entry, “Best bar in the World“, I can’t wait to see “Qwant” open its doors in its new home.

St Mary’s Gate Inn

Please forgive me here, but I want to give a quick plug & recommendation. One of my dear friends, Scott Wilson, recently took over a pub in Arundel, West Sussex, called St Mary’s Gate Inn.

The pub is a lovely traditional pub located next door to the cathedral & 5 minutes from Arundel Castle.

Scott (affectionally known as Willo) & manager Sam has worked wonders in a few months in setting up a new pub menu, with the ethos based on using quality Sussex-based food suppliers. Cheese, eggs, meat, bread & even the Biltong come from Sussex suppliers & enhanced with great beer from Dorset-based brewers Hall & Woodhouse.

I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in sitting in on supplier meetings, and also I put together the n wine list, all of which has been great fun for me.

If you are in the area, please pop in, I can guarantee you will receive a warm welcome. The pub does have 5 rooms available at a very reasonable £85 per night; they are very popular, so do try to book well in advance.
